Sung by the multitude in heaven (‘Hallelujah’, NRSV, REB, Rev. 19: 1 etc.), meaning ‘Praise the Lord’, as in e.g. Ps. 135: 3. The cry was incorporated into Christian worship and, as described by Augustine (d. 430 CE, the greatest of the early Fathers), formed the people's response to the Gradual sung after the first reading from scripture, and has been revived in modern liturgies.
