A Philistine city which was struck by disease when the Israelite Ark of the Covenant was taken there (1 Sam. 5: 6 ff.). Nevertheless David was hospitably received in Gath during his flight from Saul (1 Sam. 27: 3). The claim that David captured Gath made in 2 Chron. 26: 6 is unreliable; a more certain fact is that it was destroyed by the Assyrians in 712 BCE. ‘Tell it not in Gath’ (2 Sam. 1: 20; Micah 1: 10) became a proverb signifying disaster.
