Part of the human body which in the OT and NT can be intended both anatomically (Gen. 48: 14; Mark 15: 29) and metaphorically, as of the head of a family (Josh. 22: 14). In the NT Christ is described as head of the Church (Eph. 4: 15; Col. 1: 18), which could mean either that Christ is its head in the sense of being a king or judge, or protector, over against his Body, the Church, or it could indicate the inseparability of the Head from the Body—Christ and the Church are one organism.
