Regarded by the Hebrews as the reward for obedience to God (Exod. 15: 26). Disease therefore was directly or indirectly caused by sin (Num. 12: 10–11), though there were stringent regulations to check infections and water was to be kept pure, food inspected, and periods of quarantine observed (Lev. 13 and 14). In the NT the connection between sin and bodily well-being is not regarded as proven (John 9: 3) and sensible precautions to maintain health are recommended (1 Tim. 5: 23).
