Herbs were in use by the Hebrews both to give flavour to food and also as medicines. Bitter herbs (lettuce etc.) were eaten during the Passover meal. Other herbs mentioned in the Bible include balm, for healing (Jer. 46: 11), dill, mint, and cummin (Matt. 23: 23), and myrrh from S. Arabia (Matt. 2: 11), a brown resin used in oil and cosmetics, and also for pain relief (Mark 15: 23).
