Many islands are mentioned in the Bible. Among them are Crete (Caphtor), from which the Philistines came (Amos 9: 7); Titus was sent to pastor that Church (Titus 1: 5–14). Other islands are: Cyprus (Jer. 2: 10; Acts 4: 36); Malta (Acts 27: 39 ff.), on which Paul was shipwrecked; Patmos (Rev. 1: 9), off the Ionian coast, on which the seer of Revelation was imprisoned; and Tyre (Ezek. 26–8), famous for wealth, and connected to the mainland by a causeway built by Alexander the Great.
