    Akiva (Aqiba) ben Yosef, R.

    (ca. 50–135 ce), rabbi at Lydda, martyred in the Hadrianic persecutions. He played an instrumental role in the task of beginning to assemble and organize the oral law, which was continued by his pupil R. Meir and concluded by R. Judah ha‐Nasiʾ (Judah the Prince), resulting in the Mishnah (see).
