    ʿAmidah

(Heb “standing”) the main prayer in Jewish worship. Also called the Shemonah ʿ Esrei (eighteen [blessings]), although on regular weekdays (not Shabbat or festivals), it now consists of nineteen blessings: three at opening, followed by thirteen petitions and three at closing. For Shabbat and festivals, the three initial and final blessings frame a special blessing that focuses on the special day.
