(Heb “doorpost”) a parchment on which are written the paragraphs of the Shema (Deut. 6.4–9; 11.13–21), and on the back of which sh‐d‐y(“Shaddai,” “Almighty”) is written, often so as to be visible through a small opening in the case. Sh‐d‐yis interpreted as an acronym for shomer delatot Yisraʾel,“guardian of the doors of Israel.”
