ʾatbash

Source:
Oxford Biblical Studies Online What is This? This Glossary provides brief definitions of terms related to the Bible and biblical studies.

    ʾatbash

a form of cipher in which a word is transformed into a code by letter substitution, in which the last letter of the alphabet is substituted for the first, the next‐to‐last for the second, and so on: alefbecomes tav, betbecomes shin, gimelbecomes resh, etc. (In English, A would become Z, B would become Y, etc.) Using this method, Jeremiah transforms Babylon into Sheshach (Jer. 25.26; 51.41): b‐b‐lor bet‐bet‐lamedbecomes sh‐sh‐kor shin‐shin‐kaf.
