    Abulafia, Abraham ben Shemuel

    (13th century) a leading kabbalist and mystic of Spain. Abulafia taught a method of mystical insight that involved contemplating the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, seen as the elements of the names of God. His method was therefore called “The Path of the Names”(Shemot),in contrast to other kabbalistic methods called “The Path of the Numbers”(Sefirot).
