1They sent envoys to sue for peace. 2‘We, the servants of the Great King, Nebuchadnezzar, lie prostrate before you,’ they said; ‘do with us as you please. 3Our homesteads, all our territory and wheatfields, our flocks and herds with every sheepfold in our encampments, all are yours to deal with as you will. 4Our towns along with their inhabitants are yours to enslave; come and dispose of them as you think fit.’

5When the envoys brought this message to Holophernes, 6he went down with his army to the coast, where he established garrisons in all the fortified towns, and, at the same time, took from them picked men to serve as auxiliaries. 7Both there and throughout the surrounding country he was welcomed with garlands and dancing and the sound of tambourines. 8He demolished all their sanctuaries a 3:8 sanctuaries: so one Vs.; Gk borders. and cut down their sacred groves, for his commission was to destroy all the gods of the land, so that Nebuchadnezzar alone should be worshipped by every nation, and he alone be invoked as a god by men of every tongue and tribe.

9Holophernes then advanced towards Esdraelon, near Dothan, which faces the Judaean ridge, 10and encamped between Geba and Scythopolis, where he remained for a whole month to collect whatever supplies were needed for his army.
