Father of David, grandson of Boaz and Ruth the Moabitess (Ruth 4: 17–22), who farmed successfully (1 Sam. 16: 20). He is named in the infancy narratives of Matthew (1: 5–6) and Luke (3: 22) as one of the ancestors of Jesus.
