One of the groups in Canaan before the Israelite occupation (Gen. 15: 19), to which Moses' wife's father belonged (Judg. 1: 16). It has been suggested that the worship of Yahweh came to Israel from the Kenites. An association of Kenites with Israel is suggested by Saul's friendly dealings with them (1 Sam 15: 6) and the presents sent to them by David (1 Sam. 30: 29). This relationship continued after the Exile (Neh. 3: 14), when a Rechabite repaired a gate; the Rechabites (Jer. 35) were Kenites (1 Chron. 2: 55).
