Used in AV for ‘freed men’ (NRSV, REB, NJB) in Acts 6: 9 for members of a synagogue who opposed Stephen. They were possibly Jews who had been taken prisoner, or Jewish slaves living in Rome; they had purchased their freedom and moved to Jerusalem.
