Jesus is so called, probably on account of his coming from Nazareth in Galilee, though there are difficulties about the precise meaning of the Greek (which is transliterated ‘Nazorean’ by NRSV). When Matt. (2: 23) claims an OT prophecy in support, no one has yet discovered any such reference. It may be a punning interpretation of Isa. 11: 1, where a similar Hebrew word means ‘branch’, but it may be significant that in Syria where Matt. was probably compiled Christians also called themselves Nazarenes.
