Among the prisons mentioned in OT were Jeremiah's (Jer. 32: 2, 8) and King Jehoiachin's (Ezek. 19: 9). In the NT John the Baptist was kept in the mighty fortress of Machaerus (according to Josephus), and Peter (Acts 12: 3 ff.) and Paul (Acts 21: 34) were both held in Jerusalem, probably in the Antonian fort. Paul was also imprisoned, with chains attached, in Rome (Acts 28: 16).
