A goddess of love and motherhood worshipped among the Canaanites (Judg. 2: 13) and called Astarte among the Phoenicians, Aphrodite in Greek mythology. Her cult was encouraged by Solomon (1 Kgs. 11: 5), for which he was condemned (1 Kgs. 11: 9).
