Used in Palestine for building, for fighting, for executions, and even as a pillow (for Jacob, Gen. 28: 18). Knives and tools were made of stone. Stones were also placed to mark boundaries and landmarks (Josh. 15: 6; Deut. 19: 14) and to serve as altars (Gen. 28: 18). Metaphorically, hard hearts are described as stones (Ezek. 36: 26). ‘He that is wounded in the stones’ (Deut. 23: 1, AV, RV; ‘testicles’, NRSV, REB, NJB) was excluded from the assembly.
