Used either as a literal number in the OT (2 Kgs. 19: 35) or to express a long time (Ps. 90: 4) or a military unit (1 Sam. 8: 12). In the NT large numbers are reckoned in thousands (Mark 6: 44; Acts 2: 41; Rev. 21: 16, NRSV marg., NJB).
