In NT times the day was divided into four watches of three hours each (Luke 12: 38), which was the Roman system. The command of Jesus to keep awake (Mark 13: 35) refers to the four watches of the night, and these correspond to four dramatic events in the subsequent passion narrative (Mark 14–15)—the Lord's Supper, Gethsemane and Jesus' arrest, Peter's denials, and the handing over of Jesus to Pilate.
