In the OT the marriage concept is used to describe the relationship of God to his covenant people, Israel, which is regarded as his ‘bride’ (Isa. 62: 5). In the NT the image is applied to Christ and the Church (Eph. 5: 25 ff.) and implies a relationship of inseparability but not of identification. This image was anticipated by Jesus (Mark 2: 19), though the following verse (2: 20) reflects the situation in the Church and therefore casts doubt on 2: 19 as being from the lips of Jesus himself.
