Paul argues that ‘David’ (meaning Ps. 32: 1–2) speaks of the blessedness (‘happiness’, REB) of those to whom God reckons righteousness (Rom. 4: 6) independently of their observance of the Law. It was a typical method of the rabbis to support a statement from the Pentateuch (here about Abraham, Rom. 4: 2–3) by a quotation from a psalm.
