The Hebrews believed that Yahweh kept a register of living persons, from whom the ungodly could be blotted out (Ps. 69: 28). In the NT Paul mentions a book which records the names of believers (Phil. 4: 3). At the judgement of the dead (Rev. 20: 12) some are entered in the ‘book of life’, according to their works. The seer seems to envisage a kind of accounts book (or scroll, Rev. 5: 1) with debit and credit columns.
