In the OT certain individuals are ‘chosen’ (e.g. Moses, David) and certain groups (priests), but also the whole people of Israel are the chosen, the elect, people of the covenant (Deut. 7: 6–9); in the NT the ‘chosen’ are members of the new Messianic community (Eph. 1: 4), though Jesus warns his disciples that the Messianic invitation is not the same thing as being accepted (Matt. 22: 14). Christians addressed by 1 Pet. 1: 2 are said to have been chosen in the foreknowledge of God.
