This word is used in AV for condemnation to everlasting punishment (Mark 3: 29; ‘an eternal sin’, NRSV, REB, and NJB.) The idea of an unforgivable sin is found also in rabbinic writings. Many modern theologians regard the notion as morally incompatible with what God would include in his providence, though others hold that the doctrine witnesses to the need to brand some atrocious deeds of inhumanity with ‘a curse of supernatural dimensions’.
