The purpose of Jesus' ministry, death, and resurrection is the deliverance of his people from distress, persecutions, and suffering (2 Tim. 1: 10), from the power of sin (Rom. 7: 18–25), and from the tyranny of death (Heb. 2: 15). Jesus urges disciples to pray for deliverance from the power of the evil one (Matt. 6: 13); and the idea of rescue (e.g. 2 Cor. 1: 10; Gal. 1: 4) is common.
