Used by AV, REB, and NJB in the parable of Dives and Lazarus between whom after death a great ‘chasm’ (Luke 16: 26, NRSV) has been fixed. The saying reflects a contemporary Jewish belief that in the afterlife the souls of the departed occupied different compartments of the same underworld. Jesus is using a popular story of the time to teach that in the Messianic era there will be a reversal of the states of this present life; he is not giving a geographical description of Hades.
