A flourishing city in the Roman province of Asia. According to Col. 4: 13 Epaphras worked on behalf of the Churches of Hierapolis and Colossae (19 km. or 12 miles away) and Laodicea (9.6 km. or 6 miles away). There was a sizeable Jewish population.
